Its original production Off-Broadway, which featured Jerry Orbach and Rita Gardner, ran for 42 years, still the longest-running musical of all time. Its plot is a simple one: and boy and girl meet and fall in love across the wall between their feuding fathers’ gardens. Their fathers – long-time best friends whose feud is a ruse to draw the children together – hire an actor to pretend to kidnap the Girl. When the Boy rescues her as planned, everyone lives happily ever after. At least until Act Two. AUDITION DATE/TIME: Saturday, June 7, 2008 – 11:00am– 3:00pm Tuesday, June 10 – 7:00pm– 10:00pm Callbacks: Wednesday, June 11 at 7pm . NEEDS: -Looking for 8 performers (1F, 5M, 2 of either gender) -Must be 15 or older to audition APPOINTMENTS AND QUESTIONS: Audition appointments are very strongly recommended Please call (609) 737-PLAY or e-mail fantasticks@penningtonplayers.org to make an appointment or with additional questions. CHARACTERS: The Narrator (Male Baritone, reads 30-40 years): Charming, gentle, but vaguely menacing, the Narrator has the perfect confidence of someone who has already been hurt deeply. A consummate actor, he essays a number of different roles throughout the play – most notably the eminently clichéd Mexican bandit El Gallo. The Boy (Male Tenor, reads 16-20 years): His name is Matt. He has studied biology; he has been in a lab. He is intelligent, rational, and independent. But there is this girl... The Girl (Female Soprano, reads 15-20 years): Her name is Luisa. She is pretty, curious, and extremely creative. In time she may be a novelist, or the President of the United States, but for now she is an adolescent, and therefore utterly insane. Very strong dancer preferred. The Boy’s Father (Male High Baritone, reads 40-55 years): An amateur gardener who believes in moderation, sensible spending, and extensive pruning. Above all things, he is one half of a Vaudeville comedy team. The Girl’s Father (Male Low Baritone, reads 40-55 years): ...and he is the other half. The Girl’s Father is, of course, the polar opposite of the Boy’s Father: gregarious, excessively generous, and excitable. The Old Actor (Male or Female, Non-Singing, reads 50 – 1000 years): The Old Actor has spent a very long career performing Shakespeare; left unasked is the question of whether The Old Actor actually worked with the man himself. Self-absorbed, a little batty, but still pretty spry – and still an excellent actor, considering that he lives in a box. The Man Who Dies (Male, Non-Singing, reads 40 or so): The Man Who Dies also lives in a box; he is the Old Actor’s loyal second. He has made a career out of astonishingly extended death scenes, and his personality is about what you’d expect from a person who has made a career out of astonishingly extended death scenes. The Old Actor is a star; the Man Who Dies is a character actor. The Mute (Male or Female, Non-Singing, any age): Plays walls, trees, gondoliers, and other incidentals. In this production, must be an outstanding dancer with a good sense of physical comedy. ABOUT REHEARSALS: The production will be cast in mid-June, and materials distributed to the cast immediately thereafter. The rehearsal schedule will be abbreviated. A read-through rehearsal will be tentatively scheduled for Thursday, June 19 (7:00PM). However, the bulk of rehearsal will take place throughout the month of July. Specific rehearsal dates will depend upon cast availability.
Due to the abbreviated rehearsal schedule, actor availability during the month of July will be taken into consideration during the casting process. PERFORMANCES: Fridays July 25 & August 1, 2008 (8pm) Saturdays July 26 & August 2 (8pm) Sundays July 27 & August 3 (2pm) FOR THE CHILDRENS MUSICAL A WINNIE-THE-POOH BIRTHDAY TAIL ABOUT THE PLAY:
