Pat Hartpence, corporate giving officer for NJM Insurance Group; MCCC President Dr. Jianping Wang: and Mike Van Wagner, vice president for public affairs at NJM, unveil the new plaque in Trenton Hall on MCCC's James Kerney Campus in appreciation of NJM's contribution to the college's Trenton Campus.

TRENTON – Mercer County Community College (MCCC) has dedicated a plaque at Trenton Hall on the college’s James Kerney Campus in recognition of NJM Insurance Group’s (NJM) $125,000 charitable commitment to support expansion and development at MCCC’s campus in downtown Trenton.

The plaque, mounted in the lobby of the recently-renovated Trenton Hall, reads: “Dedicated to the Educational Mission of Mercer County Community College in the City of Trenton.”

“We have been long-time supporters of Mercer County Community College and its mission to get ready for the workforce of the 21st century,” said Mike Van Wagner, NJM vice president of public affairs. “Trenton is an important part of Mercer County, and we couldn’t be more delighted to support this mission.”

Trenton Hall, located at 137 North Broad Street, initially opened in 2012, serving as the home for MCCC’s Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising programs. The building featured a computer lab for use by Visual Arts and Fashion Design students, as well as a general use classroom and a storefront gallery.

Earlier this year, MCCC officially opened the Trenton Hall Annex, an 8,500-square-foot addition to Trenton Hall that features state-of-the-art technology, with classrooms to provide instruction in Security Systems Technology, Cyber Security, Certified Nurse Assistant, Phlebotomy and EKG (electrocardiogram) Technician prep.

“Mercer County Community College provides the sort of education and training that is important to provide skills that are in demand,” Van Wagner said. “You are working with the business community to realize what their needs are. That’s the role of a community college.”

In addition to teaching facilities, the Trenton Hall Annex features a new art gallery, community meeting space and a courtyard on the ground floor. MCCC President Dr. Jianping Wang said that additional projects are in the works to further expand the James Kerney Campus and provide more opportunities in downtown Trenton. But in order to fulfill that vision, she said, the support of the business community is of utmost importance.

“Like NJM, Mercer County Community College believes no one can do it alone,” Wang said. “Having a partner like NJM is so important. We are training the 21st century workforce, and higher education has to be the engine of economic development.”
