West Windsor, N.J. – Members of the Mercer County Community College (MCCC) men’s basketball team got a taste of history – both Mercer history and national history – as they headed to Washington, D.C., on Nov. 17 for what has become an annual Vikings road trip under Head Coach Howard Levy.

Levy, who has been arranging the trips since 2009, when he was in his second year as coach, says the D.C. tour has proven to be a great team building experience.

“I want players to get a sense of history and meet some successful people whose life stories may not be that different from their own,” Levy said, adding that he also gets an opportunity to introduce his players to D.C. friends who might serve as helpful connections down the road.

While there was clearly a basketball game on the itinerary, the players also took in some of D.C.’s most famous sites: Capitol Hill, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Supreme Court.

The players enjoyed a practice session in the facility at Capital One Arena (formerly the Verizon Center) where the NBA's Washington Wizards hold their practices. They also met Wizards Head Coach Scott Brooks, who played a year of junior college basketball at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, Cal., before playing for 10 years in the NBA. Brooks was hired by the Wizards in 2016; he coached the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2008-2015. Previously, he was an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings, Denver Nuggets, and Seattle SuperSonics.

The team capped off its very full Friday agenda with a pre-game pasta dinner at an Italian restaurant. Guests included a Vikings alumnus and several of Levy’s friends.

The following morning, the team headed to Frederick, MD, where the Vikings played Frederick Community College.

Two players, Jordan Wright and Eddie Williams, both in their first year at Mercer, recalled the trip as meaningful.

"It's part of coming together as a team," Wright said. "You have to have that mentality to play through the season."
