Men’s Soccer Players Earn All-Region and All-Conference Honors as Team Prepares for Post-Season Semifinal Oct. 21

10/19/17

The men's soccer team marked the end of the regular season with two big wins and the announcement of All-Region and All-GSAC honors. They face Harcum in the semi-finals on Saturday.

West Windsor, N.J. – The regular season for the Mercer County Community College (MCCC) men’s soccer team drew to a close with two big wins this week: a 6-0 victory over Berkeley on Oct. 16 and a 10-0 win over Kingsborough on Oct. 17. The Vikings also got word that six members of the team have been selected for post-season honors by the Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) and Region 19 of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Selected for the All-Region First Team are freshman Eichii Yamaguchi and sophomore Emiliano Fama. Yamaguchi is currently tied for 6th in Division I NJCAA with 22 goals in 18 games. He is 8th in points, with 50 (22 goals and 6 assists). The talented forward has been a dominant offensive presence for the Vikings all season.

While Yamaguchi has been dominant on offense, Fama has been highly successful at controlling the defense. Recovered from an injury suffered during the first home game, he has been the anchor in the back and has even scored two goals.

Earning All-Region 19 SecondTeam honors are sophomores Adir Versano and Jonas Castelhano Da Silva, and freshman Francesco Zanin. Versano is currently the assist leader in NJCAA Division I with 21 assists in 19 games; he also has 9 goals in the regular season and 39 points, which places him in the top 25 in that category as well. Castelhano Da Silva has been a strong presence in the midfield throughout the season and has 4 goals and 3 assists in 19 games. He continues to play both sides of the ball well.

Zanin has had a strong rookie season in goal, making may critical stops for the Vikings this season. He ranks in the top 25 in NJCAA Division I in goals against average (goals against multiplied by game length/minutes played) with a 1.00 average. Zanin currently has a .750 save percentage.

Yamaguchi, Versano, Fama and Zanin also earned All-GSAC First Team honors along with sophomore midfielder Joao Cadima. Cadima has 20 points in 16 games this season, scoring 7 goals to go along with 6 assists.

The Vikings are 14-3-1. They enter the Region 19 playoffs as the #3 seed and will travel to #2-seed Harcum for a semifinal game this Saturday, Oct. 21 at 5:30 p.m.
