West Windsor, N.J. – The 16-3-1 Mercer County Community College (MCCC) men’s soccer team is headed to the Region 19 Championship following a 4-2 semifinal win over Harcum on Oct. 21.

MCCC is currently ranked 16th nationally.

The Vikings scored goals in the 5th and 8th minutes to take an early lead. Eiichi Yamaguchi was first to find the net and Joao Cadima followed quickly thereafter. Both goals came off assists from Adir Versano, who finished with 3 assists in the game. Harcum’s Chris Campbell responded with 10 minutes left in the first half to make it a 2-1 game at the half.

Late in the second half, Jonas Castelhano Da Silva put the Vikings up 3-1 off an assist from Versano. Four minutes later, a second goal from Yamaguchi off an assist from Kotaro Okada put the Vikings up 4-1. Harcum’s Shane Holmes scored the Bears' second goal two minutes later to make it 4-2, which was the final score.

The two teams have had a competitive history over the past few seasons. During the regular season, the Vikings lost to Harcum 3-2 in overtime. Entering the Region 19 playoffs, MCCC was the #3 seed and Harcum was the #2 seed. In 2016, Harcum eliminated the Vikings from the region playoffs with a 1-0 win in the semifinal round.

Mercer will face #1-seed Essex County College in the Region 19 Championship on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 2:30 p.m. at the Proving Grounds in Conshocken, Pa. The Vikings lost to Essex 3-2 in an away game on Sept. 23. (In that game, Mercer led 2-0 before giving up three unanswered goals.) The Vikings will look to avenge the regular season loss just as they did in the semis versus Harcum.

The winner of the Region 19 Championship will advance to the Northeast District Championship with a chance to head to the NJCAA Division I Men’s Soccer National Championship in Prescott, Arizona.

The Vikings' head coach is Widmarc Dalce, now in his sixth season. He is assisted by Haris Abawi, John Pietrowski, and Milton Suah.
