10 Important Things to Know About Your Transfer Appointment

  1. The transfer counselor will review your progress and grades.
    • A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required to transfer out of MCCC. Some schools (Rutgers, TCNJ, etc.) and majors (Biology, Business, Nursing) require much higher GPAs.
    • A negative or inconsistent grade trend could impact your admissions chances despite a good GPA.
  2. Students typically need a minimum of 12-24 COLLEGE LEVEL credits completed at the time of application in order to transfer.
    • Some schools require more.
  3. We typically define "transfer degrees" as AA or AS degrees.
    • Not all of our degrees are designed to transfer. Applied Science (AAS) degrees have limited transferability.
  4. In order for transfer advising to be effective, we expect that you come to your appointment with a major already in mind.
    • Transfer credit can vary significantly by major.
    • We may refer you to Career Services if we are unable to establish a major selection.
  5. Our office works primarily with students transferring OUT of MCCC to a "4-year" College or University.
    • If you are transferring TO MCCC, you may have booked your appointment with the wrong office.
    • If you are transferring to another community college, we may still be able to help but appointments for these types of institutions may not be necessary as many are open access and credits are typically more easily transferrable.
  6. If you are planning to transfer to a NJ College/University, there are many resources available.
    • If transferring In-State, your counselor will likely discuss NJTransfer, NJ transfer law, and possible articulation agreements.
  7. If you are transferring out-of-state, the ability to determine transfer credit is somewhat limited.
    • If transferring Out-of-State, your counselor will do their best to outline possible transfer courses but there is no universal directory like NJTransfer to evaluate transfer credits for out-of-state schools.
  8. Determining the number of transfer credits to be awarded is typically not possible for majors in Fine Arts, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, and Fashion Design.
    • Transfer credit for these majors is typically awarded based on a talent assessment, portfolio review, or audition.
  9. Our office does not evaluate credits from other colleges.
    • Evaluation of incoming credits is done in partnership between the faculty coordinator and registrar's office.
  10. Although we will do our best to advise you on courses to take for your program, it is your faculty advisor who will be the one to certify that you have met all of your graduation requirements.
    • Please be sure to see your faculty advisor each semester to be sure of the courses remaining for degree completion.

THANK YOU!
We look forward to seeing you for your appointment!
